Exam Day Is Almost Here: A Last-Minute Checklist for the April Testing Window

Whether you are sitting for your first board examination or returning to recertify, the next few weeks are an important milestone. With the ABFM Family Medicine Certification Examination running April 6 through April 25, now is the time to make sure exam day logistics are locked in so you can focus on what matters most.

Bring the Right Documents

You will need two things at the testing center: your e-Ticket and a valid, non-expired, signature-bearing photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport, or state or county ID card. Your e-Ticket has important details about your examination and testing location, so keep it somewhere easy to grab. Questions about acceptable ID? Contact the ABFM Support Center at (877) 223-7437 or check your Candidate Information Booklet.

Know What to Leave at the Door

Personal items including your phone, watch, and wallet will go into a locker while you test. Review the Candidate Information Booklet ahead of time for the full list of what is and is not allowed in the testing room, so there are no surprises when you arrive.

Stay Calm if Things Run Behind

Technical delays happen occasionally. If the disruption is the testing vendor’s responsibility, you will still receive your full allotted time. Use any unexpected wait to breathe, reset, and get your head in the right place.

Pack Your Own Food

Bring a lunch. It removes one variable from an already high-stakes day. Eating is not permitted in the testing room, so plan to use your scheduled break. If you accidentally skip that break, you can wait for the next one without losing examination time, or step out briefly, though that time will count against your exam clock.

Dress for Comfort

To save time the morning of the exam, consider laying out your clothes the night before.  Dress in layers; light sweaters and jackets are permitted in the testing room and can be added or removed as needed. Heavy outerwear is not allowed inside.

Rest. Eat. You Got This!

Skip the late-night cramming. Get a full night of sleep and eat a solid breakfast before you head out. You have put in the work. The best thing you can do now is take care of yourself so you can show up sharp and focused.

Good luck to everyone testing this month. The care and commitment you bring to your patients every day reflects the higher standard at the heart of family medicine.
