What is a Family Physician?

Physicians specializing in family medicine provide front-line health care that is accessible, high quality, comprehensive, and continuous over time for people of all ages, life stages, backgrounds, and conditions. They care for individuals and families, from birth through the end of life, including a broad range of preventive care, healthy lifestyle counseling, mental health care, care of acute illnesses, and management of chronic diseases, including patients with multi-morbidity, and more.

Common Care Provided

  • Preventive Care. Includes immunizations, screening tests for cancer and other conditions, counseling on how to stop smoking, and measures necessary for individuals to live a healthy lifestyle.
  • Acute Care.  Includes care for minor or serious illnesses such as minor respiratory illnesses or pneumonia, chest pain or possible heart attack, sprains, broken bones, heart conditions, urinary tract infections, sprains, strains, skin rashes, emergency care, or hospitalizations.
  • Chronic Care. Includes care of many chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, and depression.
  • Referral and Coordination of Care. Includes making referrals and coordination care with other medical specialists and social services.

The family physician is your personal physician who knows and cares for you. With a family physician, you will have a personal medical home where your health and medical needs are considered in the context of your unique life situation, culture, and personal goals. It is through the relationship you and your family have with your family physician over time that allows you to receive the best care possible.

Why Choose an ABFM Board-Certified Physician?

When you choose a family physician who is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), you can feel confident your physician is committed to a career of lifelong learning, continuous improvement, staying up to date on the latest medical advancements and treatments, and upholding the high standards of professionalism that support the delivery of safe and high-quality care.

Board certification is a voluntary credential that exceeds state licensure requirements. This means that in addition to graduating from medical school and obtaining a state medical license, ABFM board-certified family physicians have completed additional years of training at an accredited family medicine residency program and passed the rigorous ABFM board-certification exam.

Their commitment extends beyond initial certification. To maintain ABFM Board Certification, family physicians are required to keep up to date with their clinical knowledge through regular cognitive assessment, participate in continuous professional development, demonstrate they are improving the care they provide, and consistently uphold the professionalism standards and ethics set by their peers.
