Residency Performance Improvement Program The Residency Performance Improvement Program (ResPIP) pathway is a means for residency programs to report successful completion of Performance Improvement (PI) group projects developed and overseen by the program which meet ABFM certification requirements. To participate in this pathway, residency programs will complete an application describing its capacity for teaching PI fundamentals and conducting improvement activities in clinical practice. Components of the application include: Institutional characteristics such as leadership and organizational type. Organizational history of conducting PI projects. Organizational readiness for developing, conducting, and supervising PI projects that will qualify for ABFM PI credit. Infrastructure for supporting PI projects. Commitment to providing PI educational activities. Examples of recent completed PI projects. ResPIP Requirements Expand All Collapse All Performance Improvement Requirements PI activities will need to include the following requirements to be approved by the Sponsor for PI credit: Defined Project Aim and Intervention(s) – A project must have an explicit aim for improvement that will benefit patients and/or the residency program. The project aim would be expressed in a statement that describes what is to be improved, a desired numerical improvement goal, and a time frame for achieving improvement. Use Standard Quality Improvement Methods – ABFM is not linked to any specific improvement process. However, ABFM encourages the use of standard methodologies such as the Model for Improvement, Six Sigma, and others. Include At Least One Improvement Cycle – ABFM requires a minimum baseline measurement prior to implementing an intervention, a re-audit post-intervention, and a comparison of the two. Organizational Requirements Family Medicine Residency Programs participating in this program will need to meet the following requirements and responsibilities: Review Committee – The program will need to establish a review committee or group to review PI projects and approve those projects that meet the standards for PI credit. Portfolio Manager – The program will identify a portfolio manager to oversee the program’s activities, submit required reports, and report approved projects and physician completion results. Notify ABFM of Approved Projects – The residency program will inform ABFM of newly approved PI projects in a timely manner. Current information about approved projects helps ensure that all involved participants receive credit for completing a PI project. Track Physician Participation and Notify ABFM of Completion – Project participants formally attest that they have fulfilled ABFM’s Meaningful Participation requirements (Section C) in order to earn credit. The residency program manages the attestation process, documents, approvals, and adjudication of any disputes regarding participation. Notify ABFM of Project Completion – The residency program notifies ABFM in a timely manner when a participant or group has completed an attestation so that credit can be awarded. Meaningful Participation Requirements To receive ABFM credit, reach resident must meaningfully participate in the activity. Complete a patient care audit or assessment appropriate to your work setting. Provide direct or consultative care to patients as part of the improvement project (if you provide patient care). Participate in implementing the project’s interventions (the changes designed to improve care or improve processes appropriate to your work setting). Review project data that reflects the outcomes of the care you provide or the work activity in keeping with the project’s measurement plan. Demonstrate active collaboration in the implementation of the project (e.g. team meetings, data analysis, implementation training, etc.). Ready To Get Started?
