March 26, 2024 Are you tired of cramming for a stressful single-day exam? The Family Medicine Certification Longitudinal Assessment is a popular alternative that allows physicians to keep up with medical knowledge and reduces the stress of a single large test. Instead of completing 300 questions in a single day, the longitudinal assessment allows you to complete just 25 quarterly questions over three or four years. You have five minutes to complete each question, and you may use clinical references. Immediate feedback is provided, and you may complete the questions when and where you see fit. “This is a huge step forward from the in-chair testing every decade. It mimics my real-world workflow very well. If I know the answer, I can click immediately. And if I need a quick double-check, I can do that,” said Dr. Daniel Stanhiser, ABFM Board Certified Physician. “It’s great to have immediate feedback and a source, and I’ve already learned things from it that I will teach my residents.” There are several ways to prepare for the longitudinal assessment. These include the regular review of clinical conditions and topics seen in family practice, as well as utilization of ABFM’s knowledge self-assessment activities (like the Continuous Knowledge Self-Assessment or the National Journal Club). Visit your MyABFM Portfolio today to apply for the longitudinal assessment if your exam is due. Aaron Burch serves as Editorial Content Manager for the American Board of Family Medicine.
