ABFM Board Chair Gerardo Moreno, MD, MSHS, Elected to the National Academy of Medicine

The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is pleased to announce the election of Gerardo Moreno, MD, MSHS, to the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Moreno, chair of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Department of Family Medicine and professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, also serves as chair of the ABFM Board of Directors and was previously selected as a National Academy of Medicine 2015-2017 Puffer/ABFM Fellow. The 90 new regular members and 10 international members were named during the annual meeting this month. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

The Academy recognized Dr. Moreno as one of the most influential young Latino academic leaders in family medicine and health care. He has implemented successful research initiatives and programs that enable and mentor students underrepresented in medicine and advocates for state and federal policies that diversify the health care workforce, anchored in caring for high-risk patients in underserved communities. He serves as the director for UCLA’s Program in Medical Education, also known as PRIME-Leadership and Advocacy—a dual degree MD/master’s program that trains medical students to be leaders and advocates for underserved and vulnerable populations. Dr. Moreno’s research interests include minority aging, health and health care disparities, and physician workforce diversity.
