    Visiting Scholar Program

The ABFM sponsors a Visiting Scholars Program open to all members of the family of family medicine. The Visiting Scholars Program, patterned after the very popular Larry A. Green Visiting Scholars program at the Robert Graham Center, is intended to offer participants with an in-depth immersion at the ABFM and the opportunity to do research. The length of the experience is intended to be 2–4 weeks. Scholars will work directly with ABFM staff on original research projects that align their own interests with those of the ABFM. Publication in a peer-reviewed journal will be an expectation.

There are multiple purposes of the Visiting Scholars Program. First, young researchers can enjoy a research and policy experience at the ABFM. Such scholars may learn about and conduct research regarding the roles of certification boards, in setting health care policy, and in improving the quality of health care. Second, senior researchers may wish to collaborate in depth with the ABFM through an immersion experience at the board. Third, scholars with a significant policy interest may complete the program in Washington, DC with our Vice President for Research and Policy.

All work will be collaborative and will require some preparatory work prior the experience. The goal is that each Scholar will develop a deliverable product at the end of their experience. This could include a manuscript for peer-reviewed publication, a presentation at a national conference, or a JABFM Policy Brief.

Scholars will receive a stipend to help defray costs of travel to and lodging in Lexington, Kentucky, or Washington, DC.

If you are interested in applying, submit a letter of interest with your research interests, along with your CV, to Lars Peterson, Research Director at the ABFM.
