What motivated you to join the ABFM Engagement Network?

I joined the ABFM Engagement Network because I believe family medicine is at a critical crossroads, and I wanted to help shape its future rather than simply observe it. After 25 years in clinical practice and a decade in a system-level leadership role, I’ve seen firsthand how board certification standards influence the day-to-day realities of patient care. I wanted to share my perspective because I feel strongly that practicing physicians — especially those working at the intersection of clinical care and health system transformation — need to have a meaningful voice in how certification evolves.

What has your experience been like so far?

My experience with the Engagement Network has been refreshingly positive and efficient. The surveys and opportunities to provide input have been well-designed and respectful of physicians’ time — something that matters a great deal in today’s demanding environment. Participation has fit easily into my schedule because the format is flexible and focused. What has stood out most is how thoughtfully ABFM solicits feedback and genuinely seems to listen. Knowing that my responses and those of other Diplomates are being used to inform real decisions about certification has been particularly rewarding.

Why do you think physician input matters in helping to shape the future of board certification?

Physician input is essential because we are the ones living with the practical impact of board certification every day — in how we care for patients, manage population health, lead clinical teams, and maintain our own well-being. As certification moves toward greater emphasis on continuous learning, quality improvement, and relevance to modern practice, it’s critical that Diplomates help guide that evolution. Without frontline physician voices, there’s a real risk that certification could become disconnected from the realities of clinical practice and the needs of the patients we serve. Giving Diplomates a meaningful voice ensures that board certification remains relevant, practical, and supportive of excellent family medicine rather than just another administrative burden.
