About the Board of Directors

ABFM is governed by a Board of Directors composed of sixteen physician members including the Immediate Past Chair plus two public members. Each Director serves a five-year term. The physician members of the Board include eleven family physicians and five representatives selected from nominations by the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry/Neurology, and Surgery.

Two family physicians are elected each year; one selected from nominations received from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and one from nominations for the at large category received from other organizations including, but not limited to, the American Medical Association (AMA), the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM), the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors (AFMRD), the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG), and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP); current Board members may also nominate candidates for the at-large category.

Two public members serve on the Board. They are considered for a position on the Board based upon their ability to assist ABFM in accomplishing its mission; active experience and performance in their field; knowledge of health policy or a health-related field; and, whose employment or other relationships do not represent an inherent or apparent conflict of interest. Public members are valuable to the process as they bring the voice of the public and patients to policy deliberations as it relates to family medicine.
