ABFM Releases Second Edition of the Family Medicine Factbook

The Family Medicine Factbook is an interactive, publicly accessible resource that provides a clear, data-driven picture of family physicians and the essential role they play in the U.S. health care system

The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) today announced the release of the second edition of the Family Medicine Factbook, an interactive, publicly accessible resource that provides a clear, data-driven picture of family physicians and the essential role they play in the U.S. health care system.

The Family Medicine Factbook 2.0 brings together high-quality data drawn directly from ABFM-administered physician surveys, offering policymakers, researchers, family physicians, and the public a reliable and current view of the family medicine workforce.

Why Family Medicine Data and Its Accuracy Matters

Family physicians are the foundation of U.S. primary care, providing comprehensive, continuous care across all ages and conditions and serving communities of every size and setting. Strong primary care systems are linked to better health outcomes, lower costs, and greater equity, but understanding how to support and strengthen that system requires accurate data.

The Family Medicine Factbook 2.0 is built exclusively from ABFM survey data collected directly from board-certified family physicians, making it a uniquely credible source of information about who family physicians are, where they practice, and how they deliver care. Because these surveys reach physicians engaged in ongoing certification, the data are current, nationally representative, and grounded in first-hand reporting, reducing reliance on indirect estimates or outdated sources.

By making this information transparent and easy to explore, the Factbook supports evidence-based policy, workforce planning, research, and advocacy aimed at improving access to high-quality primary care.

What the Factbook Covers

The second edition includes interactive data and visualizations on:

  • Family physician demographics and training
  • Workforce supply and geographic distribution
  • Scope of practice and practice settings
  • Trends shaping the future of family medicine

Users can explore trends over time, download figures for presentations or reports, and use the data to inform local and national decision-making.

Open Use and Sharing

ABFM encourages broad use and dissemination of the Family Medicine Factbook. All data and visualizations may be freely used in media coverage, presentations, slide decks, reports, and other materials without permission. Users are encouraged to share and adapt the content to support education, research, policy development, and advocacy.

Who Should Use the Family Medicine Factbook

  • Family physicians seeking credible data for advocacy, leadership, education, or practice improvement
  • Policymakers and health system leaders focused on workforce sustainability and access to care
  • Researchers, journalists, and members of the public looking for a trusted source on primary care in the U.S.
