    Computer-based Testing

Extensive familiarity with computers is not required, but the use of a computer keyboard and computer mouse should be within the experience of all candidates who plan to take an ABFM computerized exam. The examination is administered and proctored by staff from the Prometric Company in approximately 345 locations around the U.S. and 140 international locations.

An online tutorial (exam orientation) is available on our website. Candidates are encouraged to gain familiarity with the computer-based testing system by logging on to Exam Tutorial. Although the tutorial is not interactive, it will provide helpful insight to the exam prior to exam day. On exam day there will be a brief orientation/tutorial prior to starting the exam allowing candidates to re-familiarize themselves with the exam process.

The exam is divided into four separate sections. Computer-based testing options include the ability to navigate forward and backward through each exam section, mark items for further review, review answered, unanswered and marked items. Items must be reviewed or changed prior to expiration of time for that section. Once an exam section is ended by the candidate or the exam has timed out, you cannot return to questions in that section. The computer-based examination contains a clock showing the time remaining in the top center of the exam screen.

Prometric also offers a “Test Drive” for physicians who wish to become familiar with the testing process and the testing center before their exam day. It is a 30-minute orientation in which the Prometric staff allows a candidate to experience the check-in/registration process, a live 15 minute non-medical related sample test, and an introduction to the staff and surroundings such as parking and entrances. The cost is $30 and appointments must be made through the Prometric website:

The Test Drive experience is available at many of the Prometric test centers on Thursdays from 4:00 PM–5:00 PM. An appointment must be scheduled in advance and it is highly recommended that you schedule well in advance of your ABFM examination. Appointments are all made on a first-come first-served basis for all Prometric test clients.
