Gerardo Moreno, MD, MPH

Dr. Moreno is a family physician at a Los Angeles County family health center where he has a continuity clinic, trains family medicine residents, and teaches medical students. He is also an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is the Director for UCLA’s Program in Medical Education, also known as PRIME-Leadership and Advocacy—a dual degree MD/master’s program that trains medical students to be leaders and advocates for underserved and vulnerable populations.  At UCLA, he is a member of the Steering Committee for Community Engagement for the School of Medicine and Health System. 

Dr. Moreno received his medical degree from UCLA and completed his family medicine residency at the University of California San Francisco. He joined the UCLA Department of Family Medicine faculty after completing a post-doctoral research fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at UCLA.  While an RWJ Foundation clinical scholar, Dr. Moreno received advanced training in research methods, community-based participatory research (CBPR) and obtained a Master of Science in Health Services from the UCLA School of Public Health. The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) selected Dr. Moreno as the 2015 James C. Puffer, MD/American Board of Family Medicine Fellow.

Dr. Moreno is a clinician, educator, and researcher with expertise in the delivery of team-based primary care, diabetes in older adults, physician workforce, and mitigating issues around polypharmacy. He is a recipient of a prestigious National Institute of Health (NIH) Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award in Aging Research and co-directs the Community Liaison Core for the NIH funded UCLA Resource Center for Minority Aging Research. Dr. Moreno co-chaired an expert panel that led published clinical guidelines for the care of older persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. He has published studies that have increased our understanding of health disparities and the social determinants of health. Dr. Moreno has also published on other important issues addressing physician workforce diversity, medical education, and family medicine. 

Dr. Moreno is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physician, a mentor for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine’s CAFM Educational Research Alliance and has served as a delegate for the Los Angeles County California Academy of Family Practice Chapter. He enjoys mentoring medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty interested in research. He grew up in a small agricultural community in Central California’s Merced County and enjoys spending time with his wife and two children who are in elementary school. 

Dr. Moreno serves the ABFM on the Professionalism Committee, the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Research & Development Committee as its Chair.  He serves as an ex-officio member of the Certification Committee, the Engagement & Communications Committee, the Knowledge Assessment Committee.
