Daniel Spogen, MD
Dr. Spogen is a full-time professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and has been Chair of the department since 2006. Dr. Spogen has been instrumental in encouraging students to pursue a vocation in Family Medicine, as well as bringing a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) to the residency and starting up a new rural residency program in Elko, Nevada. The Department of Family and Community Medicine has been awarded the Clinical Department of the Year every year since he has been department chair. In 2011 he was awarded the Truckee Meadows Award for Excellence in Teaching Healthcare Delivery.
Dr. Spogen received his medical degree at the University of Southern California and completed his residency at Glendale Adventist Medical Center. After graduation he established a solo practice in Reno, Nevada and began teaching at the Family Medicine Residency program. The department was in the midst of restructuring, and for two years Dr. Spogen was appointed Interim Residency Director while still working in the private sector. During his 21 years in practice, he worked the full scope of family medicine including obstetrics, while he continued mentoring students in the office and volunteering with the Student Outreach Clinic. In 2004 he received the American Academy of Family Physician’s (AAFP) Exemplary Teaching Award for Voluntary Faculty. His countless hours working with the Family Medicine Interest Group, the Outreach Clinic, and students earned him recognition as the Nevada Family Physician of the Year in 1996 and 2010, the Exemplary Teaching Award for Full-Time Professor in 2013, and the Richardson Excellence in Teaching Award in 2017.
Dr. Spogen has been active in the AAFP both at the local and national levels, serving in various board positions including President of the Nevada Academy of Family Physicians and member of the AAFP Board of Directors from 2011–2014. He has been in the Congress as an alternate and a delegate since 1989.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Spogen is passionate about fly fishing and is a “true enough cowboy.” He takes an international trip every year to go fly fishing, most commonly to New Zealand. He has trained and started colts to be good ranch horses. Dr. Spogen had a ranch that he sold a couple of years ago that ran about hundred head of Angus cattle. He commonly is quoted that he has “doctored” more calves than people!
Dr. Spogen has been married to “his love of his life,” Ann, for 43 years. Their daughter, Kristen, lives in Cincinnati, Ohio and is an accomplished young adult author. Their grandson, Ren, is starting kindergarten this year and is the focus of a lot of their happiness.
Dr. Spogen serves the ABFM on the Credentials Committee, the Certification Committee, and the Examination Committee as its Chair.
